The point I was trying to make was that reducing 'game quests' to an
abstraction of 'Move something (which may be an object or something
less tangible) from one place to another) may be technically correct
but also has destroyed in the process any meaningful understanding
of what actually is going on. It is the less abstract differences
that are really important when thinking about quests.
Of course some abstraction is required to do away with the irrele-
vant differences, and deciding what is, and what is not, relevant is
difficult and likely to cause some controversy, but saying that all
quests are fed-ex is not at helpful in the discussion either. I do
not want to suggest however, that you are reducing too much.
What would help is rather than looking at how different quests are
the same underneath the different objects and monsters involved, to
look at how quests can and do differ in the eyes of the players even
if from a reductionist point of view they really are the same.
