Not a direct answer to your question but zMUD, a shareware mud
client, has gotten 35,000 people to pay for the client at $20
each. I have been using clients since 1990 and I would guess that
most serious mudders use a client.  But I have also been making bots
and getting kicked off MUD systems so what do I know?
