Fair point.  Levels, as has been pointed out, hark back to the days
of D&D and its ilk, where they were a generalised metric of the
'adventure-worthiness' of a character.  If a character simply isn't
adventure-worthy, then I guess they would stay at 1st level, despite
being the king of the basket-making world.

At that point there simply aren't any ways of summing up the value
of two characters that have drastically different aims and goals,
any more than in the real world.  I'd find it hard to say who was
'better', the Pope or Michael Schumacher.
