I think you're missing a point here. Equipment selection can be fun
in its own right. Magic: The Gathering is *not* about playing cards,
it's all about acquiring, optimising and playtesting your
deck(s). Diablo II (IMHO) is not about killing Diablo, or even
fighting other players, it's about acquiring/optimising your
equipment (since there are only a few, well-known character builds
that work really well, optimising stats/skills is not a really
relevant activity).
