FUDforum can be used together with a mailing list, so that you can either
post to the mailing list or directly on the forum. The functionality is
absolutely amazing and the forum has excellent support by it's author. The
forum is free, under a GNU licence I think?

If you like mailing lists but also want to have a forum backend (frontend?)
to support the mail, it's perhaps one of the best alternatives of all that I
have tested.
