One can likely learn quite a bit from the resources over at WorldForge
and NeL. WorldForge has mailing lists, forums and a wiki, but their
core dev team members seem most fond of IRC as a communication medium.
NeL has a forum, a few dev blogs and a wiki. Both are Open Source
projects so the code and documentation is also available for perusal.
WorldForge aims to create a complete framework for MMO building
(server/client/libraries/tools) as well as a series of Proof of
Concept games. NeL is the Open Source project behind the server that
runs Saga of Ryzom.

To be honest, I think you'll have a hard time getting people currently
involved in commercial development engaged in a concrete technical
discussion about framework design since an open discussion about such
details may compromise both their company's competitive advantages and
open them up to potential exploits from their user base.
