I don't understand what's interesting about that commentary. I mean, it
sounds EXACTLY like my experience in the industry. It wasn't a MMORPG, but
it still had a clique of inept leaders who refused to listen to anybody,
absurd milestones that we had to fake to get our paychecks, management
without any ability to manage or without a clear direction for the
project, resentment from the rest of the team over these things leading to
poor morale, and if MobyGames is to be believed, firing half the team in
the end (I wasn't there by that point).
That's par for the course. More companies are like that than not. The only
interesting thing is that f13 bothered to interview this guy right now,
while the bitterness is still topical, rather than it showing up in this
guy's blog three months from now when nobody cares anymore.
Most game companies implode silently, or employees complain on private,
industry-only web forums average people can't join. A good, old fashioned
public meltdown is exactly the sort of thing we need more of so that
people realize that the way the game industry operates just doesn't work,
and things need to change.
