Not a bad idea.  Its used in one of my favorite pen  and paper games -- TORG.
There's a martyr card that basically gives you the ability to solves
sucessfully any one situation at the cost of your character's life.

An interesting twist TORG puts on it is that you must put the Martyr
card into play, if you want it, as soon as you get it.  You don't
*have* to use it but there is a significantly unpleasant penalty (but
not as bad as permadeath) if you don't.

This put the character in question "under a doom" and adds to the
heroic tension leading up to the death of the character.
