Some people are also waiting for companies to come out of private alphas and
betas for world building tools and UGC persistent world companies.

It is safe to say metaplace by Raph Koster (areae), and whirled from Daniel
James (three rings) are two examples of places where you can get some
leverage into the tech and art assets to build your own worlds but they are
not yet ready to launch.

The cost of building an amateur mmo is going to spike downward in the next
six to nine months, may as well just go play some WoW or go enjoy some
sunshine until they launch and you can have a chance to review their
offerings, terms of use, and potential competitors before you build your
world.

That is what I am doing. I have waited ten years for a shot at building an
interesting and differentiated online world, waiting another year won't kill
me.
