I'll offer my two cents.
I went to a really inspiring Demo Night at my local IGDA chapter yesterday,
and one of the guys presenting was the developer of Osmos.
He said he submitted his game to the Independent Games Festival two years in
a row. First year, he got some really solid feedback and suggestions, and
second year his game was nominated for 5 awards.

He said those nominations did amazing things for him - artists that he
wanted to work with got back in touch with him, people started talking about
his game everywhere.
I would guess most people will NOT get nominated in any given festival, but
I think it's an interesting avenue to pursue. Even film festivals now have
interactive components.
