I think there are some valid uses for nonfunctional objects like the
fork in multiplayer games. For example, houseowners in UO (including
guilds for guild meetings) will have formal dinners in their houses,
with plates, forks, candles, tables, chairs, etc. Even if the fork does
not have a gameplay function it is still used as a prop, thus giving it
a social function.
