I've got plans for a MUD that's split across several servers, with
transparent character transfer between areas... well at the moment the plans
are work in progress, let alone the MUD itself!
On the subject of not being the same after the transfer; how about make a
language for vaguely describing players, and the target system creates
a character based on that, possible with the help of some random numbers to
make it more interesting?
