My major purpose on this list is to be in the company of people who have
similar interests, so we can bounce ideas off each other. The list is
well-defined enough that we all know pretty much what a MUD is and what
development is and as a result, we can rest assured that the vast majority
of list members are technically astute and interested in building online
multiplayer games or having such games built. As a result, I like being
here because I can see new ideas I would never have thought of on my own; I
can air new ideas to see what the reaction is; and I can ask and answer
questions related to the list charter. I don't ask a lot of questions, and
I'm not always capable of answering the really deep questions that get
asked, but it's very important to me that I have the opportunity to
converse with other people who are interested in this field. Nothing
happens in a vacuum, but here, there are other ideas and other opinions
that reflect on my own -- for better or worse. I learn a lot here. I hope
I've taught at least a few people a few things, and helped others with
their own projects in some small way. I like the idea that we can all
collaborate in this forum, and we can influence each other.
Looking over that, it's very much like the reason I play MUDs in the first
place.
