Reference? I've never heard of Shades. Should I go searching the
archives?

Aye, I've played those recently. They're fun in the same way that
solitaire is fun for me; it's an exercise to see how far I can get
this time, testing the realms of chance against some amount of rote
skill and luck. There's also an aspect of nostalgia. Same thing
goes for playing Adventure (most recently through the web port
at http://www-tjw.stanford.edu/adventure/).
