There are other ways to support a currency. Again, a prime example
would be UO's vendor system (Why does that keep coming up?). Although
it's entirely for player-to-player transactions, the required medium
of exchange is gold. This should put a great deal of force behind the
prescribed currency. The vendors add transaction value to gold which
doesn't exist for any other item. Add to that the fact that one buys
from the vendors with a debit card, avoiding carrying gold around, and
it should be a great support to the currency.

And that sort of thing is possible without any NPC merchants at all.
