I've found Core Java, by Horstmann & Cornell (both volumes) to be a
useful overview of the language and classes, best read with a copy
of the classes' javadoc handy in a web browser. Note that while it
provides an overview (with nontrivial examples) on a broad range of
topics (e.g. reflection), it doesn't go into the nitty-gritty and
explain everything that you can do with those topics -- for that,
you'd want a topic-specific book.

One of the nice things about Java is that the classes are so rich
that there's probably a way to do what you want fairly simply,
already setup for you. The hard part is finding it.
