Turbine can get away with it since the most CPU intensive operations
(the MOB A.I.) are down to a barebone minimum. Mobs have very few
states and no pathfinding to speak of.

If you go to the current top-of-the-line hardware, which would be a
quadri-processor Ghz board (with oodles of the ram pouring thru the
backpanel of the rack, too :) ), you could probably run a good-sized
world on a single box.

I think Mythic indicated that each world for Dark Age of Camelot
(which is intended to have an EQ-level population, so peak
connections of 2500 people on a world) would run on a cluster of 4
boxes; one per realm plus a central server (runs the frontier areas
or central as running the database/backup/login services? can't
remember).
