There's a lot of fodder in Star Trek, via the holodeck. It occurs in
Next Generation and Voyager episodes [and not in Deep Space 9].

Examples:

The Doctor on Voyager: knows he's a hologram[avatar], wants to
become more and does. [Pinocchio Syndrome].

Dr. Moriarity on TNG: hologram/avatar, does not know he is one,
figures out how he is part of the ship, takes control, is in love,
strikes a deal, etc.. [Revelation Syndrome]

Leonardo DaVinci on Voyager: hologram/avatar, does not know he is
one. Gets taken by a group on a planet, and learns more about
science/continues to create on a greater level. [Stranger in a
  Strange Land Syndrome]

Holograms used as combat dummies by the Hirogen on Voyager: they
rebel, start freeing holograms everywhere. Most cannot break out of
their programmed genetic/stereotype traits. Only one can evolve
beyond/break the programming. [Nature vs. Nuture]

Holoaddiction: Lt. Reginald Barclay on TNG/Voyager. A series of
stories where the holodeck fantasies, its characters, and his
playing time take over his life, and the struggle to control it,
also the reasons why he uses it so. [Net Addiction]

Lt. Geordi LaForge & one of the creators of the Enterprise's
engines. He creates an avatar of her from their data files in the
holodeck to help him work out a problem. Falls in love. Deals with
her only being an avatar. In a later story, he meets her for
real. He expects her to be the same as the avatar he created/how she
acted in the holodeck, and also treats her familiarly. The story
then deals with how she deals with all this, and how he does. [Woman
behind the Mask, who's really behind these characters and how much
do we take from the games to real life]
