[MUD-Dev] What do game companies look for?

This goes to all the developers out there who have ever tried to
hire a staff. I have a few H/R-type questions for you:

  1) How important is a resume, if a person can demonstrate the
skills you desire? In other words, how often do you try to look
past the paper to the person, or simply ask someone outright
because you've seen what they can do?

  2) Which is more important, versatility (ie, a little experience
in a lot of categories) or expertise (a lot of experience in just
  one area)?

  3) Do you even consider hiring from unsolicited resumes / letters
of inquiry, or does those get file-13'd? Do you use services to
help you locate candidates (like Monster.com) or do you prefer
candidates to seek you out (put an ad on your website and wait for
  resumes)?

  4) How important is location? ie, do you look only in your own
local area, or do you hire people from other areas (assuming that
their skills are what you are looking for) and then bring them to
  you?

  5) How important are communication skills? What about customer
service skills? Which departments do you give the most leeway to
your requirements, and which the least?

  6) What one area of your own company would you most like to see
strengthened (either from within or without)?

Thanks for your time - if you wish to respond privately, that's
okay, too. I'm trying to get an understanding of HR methodology in
the game developers corner of the universe, as compared to the
generic software development sector (which I'm in right now).
