Not that I don't agree, but a possible answer is:

  Because, in the quest for common vocabularies and terminologies,
  the majority of people are going to associate the M's trogether
  (pushed on by a huge amount of articles/press/etc written by
  people and/or quoting people who have already done so), and its
  rather hard to stand in the way of such a juggernaut of common
  opinion (even when it is foolish ;).
