In my experience, it was common that we played EQ and gossip with
group member by phone in the same time. It is much more convience
and faster.
In the other hand, in-game relationship is not as solid as
out-of-game relationship. We could make 'friend' by network, but we
need more out-of-game interaction to make 'real friend'.

It troubles me these month. For me, there is a huge moat between
in-game and out-of-game. From the point of RP, that is normal. I
could be an attractive female, be a blackhearted warlock...anyway,
that is IN-GAME. I back to my designer's life when I keyin the
'logoff' command. When I want to discuess how to play the game with
my RL friends, I using ICQ, mobile phone, email. When I play the
game, I using tell/chat/shout/guildtell in game.
Here is the problems. About the out-of-game chat client, when I
receive a message from my guidemate in game(he is playing but I am
offline), what shall I be? the role in game, or the role out of
game?
Maybe you don't know, MMORPG made a huge chaos backwash in oriental
society. Newbie gamers could know that is just a GAME. One
ridiculous /archives/meow?group+ a Lineage guild could not take a castle for weeks,
which guarded by another well-organized guild. Finally, these clever
guys found a faster method... They drove 1 hundred KM to another
city, rushed into the Network Cafe the other guild stayed, bound all
the players online. Of course, they could capture the castle
then. These poor boys didn't know what is in-game and what is
out-of-game. and our nothing-important-but-profit MMOG company made
this issue worse.
More and more companies and MMOGs are trying to fill the moat,
making the out-of-game life more and more difficult to distinguish
from in-game life. Project Entropia, Supafly...What is Reality? and
what is Virtual Reality? and where is role-play?
