Are you sure you need to limit yourself with the term 'server'?

Perhaps you've already discounted the idea of a fully
p2p/distributed system?

Is it really still economic these days to develop
yet-another-client/server-based-system?

I feel like Slartibartfast - wake me up when the global economy is
sufficiently prosperous that it can afford to finance the
development of a p2p system...  ;-)
