Certainly it is. It's still playing a role. For example, I
participate in a MMLARPG called "The Society for Creative
Anachronism."

In it I role-play a 14th century manuscript illuminator. The
manuscript pages I actually produce are the product of my own actual
skill, but that skill certainly enhances the role playing
experience. "Lady Arwen ferch Morgan, subject of Their Majesties
Ragnarr and Kyneburh, King and Queen of the Kingdom of Atlantia" is
a just a role I play within a particular virtual context, but my
actual skills affect how well I can play any given role in that
context. The context is simulated, the people and their actions are
real, just as in computer-mediated VR.

I'm looking for interesting and well-populated virtual worlds. In
those virtual worlds, games which involve actual skill will interest
me more than games that involve punching a time clock or going down
a shopping list.
