This is exactly what I'm working on right now. I got an engine that
is very much a MUD, but my focus is on the client application. I'm
developing a client that draws the room and all objects in it in 3D
in the lower half of the client while all other information is text
in the upper half. Including chat text as "speech bubbles".

The reason I did this in the first place was that I were frustrated
that even though the graphical MMOG's out there were nice to look at
they generally is a pain to use when it comes to communicating and
socialising.

Every feature you mention in your email I've planned for my system
(except Shockwave since I'm doing a stand-alone client) so obviously
I'm also interested in others views of this.
