Ok, a few developments since I sent the original message. Javelin
was kind enough to inform me that PennMUSH does link against
OpenSSL.

Also, Nick Gammon was kind enough to point me at Stunnel
(stunnel.org). He has a tutorial on how to set it up with his client
at:
