I've finally decided to officially subscribe to the list, so I thought
I'd send a message to introduce myself to the community. I've been
reading through the archives, picking up interesting ideas from a couple
years ago. Some here might have met me from the MUD-Dev dinner held at
the GDC.
My name is Brian Green, frequently known online as "Psychochild". I
started playing text MUDs in college in 1992. While it's not unusual to
start playing in college, I am the only person I know from my group of
friends at college that played online games and still managed to
graduate. :) With two degrees, even (Computer Science and Spanish, for
those curious).
I took the usual road after college, thinking that there was no way
anyone would actually pay me to work on a MUD. ;) So, I got a boring
job at a company that made mapping software; it didn't take me long to
get bored with that.
As I was working with a recruiter to find a job in the game industry (I
didn't dream I'd be able to work on an online game immediately), my
resume crossed the desk of a producer at 3DO looking to hire a
programmer for Meridian 59. Well, to cut to the chase, in May of 1998,
I was working on Meridian 59.
During my time there, I went from working with a senior
programmer/designer to being the only programmer on the project and
working with the designer on design as he worked with me on programming
the implementation. It was a nice experience because I share a bond
with a group of distinguished developers that worked on the game before
I did. I can also blame these people for the awful things I had to fix
while working on it. :)
I left 3DO earlier this month and am currently "between jobs". :) I've
got a few good leads on jobs, but if anyone wishes to talk to me or has
any hot leads, feel free to contact me personally. (You can find a copy
of my resume at: http://www.psychochild.org/personal/gresht.html)
My particular interests on the technical side of things are scripting
languages and network programming (although, I'm still quite a newbie at
network programming). On the design side of things, I'm rather good at
developing logical game mechanics and have quite an interest in
community development. I hope to contribute a bit as time goes on.
