I believe making the 3k payment a deposit, returnable in 1 rl year would
go a long way to stop rumors of the god just paid for his position, etc...
If it was just a deposit I think it would accomplish weeding out some bad
gods, giving the gods an incentive to do a good job.  As well as removing
any possible conclusions that mortals/immortals might jump to, since in
that scenario you wouldn't be profiting from it.
