Speaking as a lowly Quake player who has gleefully, antisocially
sniped for hours on ends...

I'll make several small technical amendments that otherwise do nothing
to change your argument.

The very BEST snipers (this from my ill-spent Team Fortress days)
actually specifically didn't camp. I learned to snipe from the guy who
authored the Canalzone map; he sniped really, really well. He did it
by constantly moving from place to place and avoiding confrontations
he wasn't going to win.

--something of actual interest--
Very good snipers were quite coveted/hated by clans (mine
included). Interestingly, they had a very similar role to the medieval
archer. I'm sure there would have been cutting off of fingers if some
folks could have done it.
--end actual interest--

Finally, sniping is just an antisocial activity, even within clans. It
requires a great deal of concentration which more or less blots out
any desire or ability to either talk to team mates or taunt the
dead. Of course I'm not a world-class player, and I wasn't in a
world-class Clan ! or anything, but what I've said was true in my
experience.
