What repulses you?  Every job or interesting project I've ever
gotten has been through "networking".  Granted, not to the degree
described in the article, but that's a matter of degree.  I haven't
had to actively search for work in twenty years.  Even in this
economy I've got more (paid!) projects than time to do them all.

"Getting funded" is a matter of convincing people that you have an
idea worth funding and that you can be trusted to give that funding
an honest shot at a return.  It is easier to do this with people you
already know, and whose interests and resources you already
understand, than it is to cold-call a stranger and convince them to
give you money. I'm actually a lot more repulsed by the door-to-door
salesman approach than I am by the networking approach.
