This sounds like a natural progression from minions/pets. First
there were pets. Then there were pets you could advance. Somewhere
along the line, pets became minions, like mercenaries or
faeries. And you could ask them to do things, i.e. control them
within a very narrow range of activities.
I think you've hit on the next advancement. Plus it's convergent
with many crpgs where you can control the whole party. It'd be an
easy transition for those who do play crpgs. I bet it occurs sooner
[and possibly already] in space-based games, where the ship can be
considered your party and your player. Then the various characters
you control are assigned to different positions in the crew.
While that spaceship scenario is easily understandable and makes a
lot of common sense, the same scenario put forward for a
fantasy-based game would probably be greeted as not be
community-building friendly. Why would that be?
