There's a saying: Offense wins games, while defense wins
championships.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts were considered
offensive powerhouses going into last year's NFL playoffs.  Neither
had much success against the New England Patriot's defensive-minded
system.  That's not always the case, but it certainly seems to
happen enough to make it very difficult to argue that emphasis on
defense in the NFL never leads to success.
