But defense in football is a much different animal.

There are basically two forms of offense in football: gaining yards
and scoring points.

First, a great defense can score points. Tamba Bay's super bowl
winning defense did just that. Defenses score points through
safeties or by returning fumbles and interceptions for touchdown.

Second, a great defense generates yards through field position. If
you hold the opposing team to 3 and outs (especially if they lose
yards) you are probably going to progressively gain yards through
positive field position.

Thus, an NFL defense is actually capable of achieving both forms of
offense.
